Radio Metal Plays Loud

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010 at 11:20am by Doc' Interview
Painful Exploration by Loud At Least! offers some accessible music that hardly disowns the bands Whitesnake or UFO.

Radio Metal had the chance to catch up with Gernot to find out more about the Austrian band. Here it goes!

NAOS: A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010 at 7:20pm by Doc' Interview
Naos proved the good quality of their compositions with their 5 track EP Inoctura. By mixing gothic and symphonic atmospheres, the French band offer a sound that is bound to attract metal fans of female vocalist bands. However, Naos does not only stand out because of Sté’s voice, but also thanks to the interesting progressive touches in the songs. As you know, throughout the summer Radio Metal will be setting the spotlight on unknown artists. This week, we are discovering Naos through our interview with Tom (guitar) and Sté (vocals).

X-Calibur : Version X Metal

Thursday, July 22th, 2010 at 08:20am by Doc' Interview
Throughout the summer, Radio Metal will be allowing upcoming bands to take over with interviews, articles and other of our home-made specialities. On the 19th of July this year, the Swiss band X-Calibur granted us a short interview to promote their album Distorsions, released last year.

Gary, the trio’s guitarist, talked about his three year old band and the various mixtures of metal they perform. Indeed, X-Calibur are the living proof that a band can have influences such as Def Leppard, Rammstein and Slayer...

Coroner : The Existential Matter

Friday, July 2nd, 2010 at 2:45pm by Spaceman Interview
Coroner's fans who were at the Hellfest this year were stunned to discover banners announcing Coroner as part of the 2011 edition of the festival, including the special mention “reunion show”. Stunned, because since they split up in 1995, this mythical progressive thrash metal band has always made it clear that there’s no way they would reunite. To the great displeasure of the fans who resigned, even if they kept on dreaming of seeing what was impossible becoming possible. Therefore, when they stumbled upon this ad they inevitably pinched themselves just to be sure they were not dreaming again.

This Swiss band, composed with Ron Broder (aka Ron Royce), Tommy Vetterli (aka Tommy T. Baron), and Marky Edelmann (aka Marquis Marky), has put out some of the greatest and most innovative music the metal world has ever known. In that regard, they became one of the most respected bands from the connoisseurs. Listen to such marvels like Mental Vortex or Grin: these albums are still ahead of our time.

Coroner's presence at the 2011 Hellfest programming leads automatically to thousands of questionings. Therefore, we at Radio Metal tried to get some more information. By chance, at the same festival this year, Tommy Vetterli was here to help 69 Chambers out – the band of his lovely wife-to-be – bringing a little bit of his own magic to the stage. One of our performing monkeys caught Tommy right after the show in order to have a little chat with him. All the answers to the fans' questions are here to be found, even though they are probably not what they expect... The least we can say is that Tommy is both a chilled out and quite frank person. He is not the kind of man who wonders too much, it is at least the way we felt meeting him. But when he has to answer questions he does not beat about the bush! He also made some revelations about Kreator, a band he has joined for two really controversial albums, and especially about its leader, Mille Petrozza, which are… quite a surprise!

Here comes the transcription of our improvised little chat...

Nevermore Sucks

Monday, June 14th, 2010 at 10:32am by Radio Metal Interview
The blog Metal Sucks is a big reference for us. Their liberty of tone knows no bound, their analyses are deep and smart, and their sense of humor is caustic. To be honest, we completely identify ourselves in their alternative approach. Metal Sucks is as disturbing as it is unifying. And to top it all, these guys regularly come up with genius ideas to keep their readers spellbound. One of their last strokes of genius was a contest involving the band Nevermore.

A few months ago, the instrumental version of the eponymous song from The Obsidian Conspiracy, Nevermore’s new album, leaked on YouTube. So the Metal Sucks guys thought: “What about a contest ?” They contacted the band with their idea: the readers would be invited to submit their own version of the song, with their own lyrics and vocal lines. The contestants would have to send a video with the instrumental track and their vocal recording. The winner would then be invited to perform their version of the song on stage with the band.

The contest was a success, and the winner was announced on May 7th. His name his Ben Robson, and his incredibly entertaining body language has been acclaimed by the readers. Don’t get deceived by his deliciously redneck looks (the Pittsburgh Penguins sweatshirt is a blast), ‘cause Ben is a master. Not only is his vocal performance impressive, but his vocal lines are also particularly inspired.
Here’s his video:

We wanted to know more about the Ben phenomenon and contacted him for a few questions.

GIRL POWER IS BACK

Friday, June 11th, 2010 at 5:12pm by Saff Interview
Indica is the new racing horse in the Nuclear Blast stable. After building a strong fanbase in their home country thanks to their “mystic romantic pop-rock”, the five pretty Finns took a plunge in the deep end in 2009 when they played as Nightwish’s supporting act during the European shows. After four albums and a best of in Finnish, Indica are on their way to conquer the old continent with their first English album, A Way Away, produced by Tuomas “Mr. Nightwish” Holopainen.

Jonsu, Jenny and Sirkku, three of the band's members, were in Paris at the end of May for a marathon interview day. After being offered several tons of Indica goodies, we were able to ask a few questions to the smiling, over-motivated musicians, proud of their new baby and delighted at the welcome France has given them so far.

This way for the interview!

A Luck That Warrel Deign To Talk To Us...

Friday, June 4th, 2010 at 3:59pm by Spaceman Interview
Warrel Dane is an incredible character. First of all, he’s a fantastic singer for Nevermore, clearly one of the most important band in metal nowadays. Humanly, Warrel seems phlegmatic, his personality composed and thoughtful. In the end, the man's niceness puts you at ease very quickly.

When we interviewed him, Warrel was obviously knackered, a fact for which he apologized at the end of the conversation. And before I started firing questions, when I asked him if he was OK, he gave me a nervous, hesitating, "I'm OK", before laughing of his tiredness. And yet he managed to answer our questions with a truly infectious good mood.

This interview was a good opportunity to talk about The Obsidian Conspiracy, Nevermore’s first album in five years, but also about various subjects, among which the contest our American friends of Metal Sucks organized and which was won by Ben Robson and his now cult video.

To Arms, Listeners !

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010 at 1:48pm by Metal'O Phil Interview
As a result of the tragic Polish presidential plane crash, the Sabaton Swedes have decided to respect the mourning period by postponing the recording of what they claim to be the grestest Heavy Metal music video of all time.

For the release of their new album Coat of Arms, the band decided to call upon their fans to find theme ideas. The band received an unexpected amount of 10 000 suggestions, running from bizarre (Star Wars) to serious and relevant to the band's image, such as the Battle of Warsaw in 1944.

We also took advantage of the interview with bassist Pär Sundström to evoke the subject of Metalizer, the first album which the band released... only three albums later!

Sex, Danko & Rock N'Roll

Thursday, May 27th, 2010 at 3:30pm by Spaceman Interview
Honestly, nowadays, what’s more rock’n’roll than Danko Jones? Airbourne? Nice try, but too close to AC/DC, and therefore too conformist. The henhouse Buckethead demanded be built during the recording sessions for Chinese Democracy, and which was, or so the legend says, brought down by Axl Rose’s wolf? Too weird. French deputy Patrick Roy, who made a habit of speaking of hard rock in front of his peers? Too well-dressed. Giant turtles laying eggs in Guyana? Errrr... No, nothing’s more rock’n’roll than the madman Danko Jones when he treads the boards.

Speaking of which, the man releases a his new album this year, Below The Belt. Danko's back in all his glory, after a Never Too Loud that was quite nice but showed far too much restraint for the fans, who wanted only one thing: to hear some rock! And with this new record, it's very likely they found the best recipe: hard heavy music with perfect melodic choruses and vocal lines that have never been so rich before. Below The Belt is a mine for hard rock hits.

We wanted to know more about Danko Jones, the character (you could almost say the comedian), the band, but also about Below The Belt, an album with a nice future. To answer our questions, we interviewed John Calabrese, Danko’s bassist and friend, the man who puts some depth in all this craziness. Or maybe not…

"Religious Enlightenment : I Think It's All Bullshit."

Friday, May 14th, 2010 at 2:15pm by Metal'O Phil Interview
Come on, be honest: who ever really paid attention to Tarot before Marco Hietala and his two-headed beard joined Nightwish? And yet Tarot has been knocking about unpretentiously for over 25 years. Very quickly, the Finns traumatized the Metallica roadies with their inordinately heavy and cumbersome amps. Their new album, "Gravity Of Light", is about religious oppression on non-believers. On the occasion of this imminent release, Metal'O Phil got to talk to Marco.
The good little snoopers that were are couldn't help trying to glean a few information on the new Nightwish album, which won't be released before 2011. Speaking of which, we asked Marco about his recruitment in the band – which was not all that easy...

« The Music Is Like A Missile, And The Lyrics Are The Warhead For It »

Friday, May 7th, 2010 at 6:3pm by Metal'O Phil Interview
When you listen to him, Maik, Heaven Shall Burn's guitarist, seems more fascinated by history than by music. Music seems to be a pretext for him to convey a message, and to re-establish historical accuracy, in particular for some specific WWII events:
"The music is like a missile, and the lyrics are the warhead for it ".

He admits it with a humility that commands respect: "Without the lyrics, I don't think that our music, or even Heaven Shall Burn would be anything special. We're totally aware that we're not Morbid Angel or Dream Theater, like great musicians who just do Art through the music they play".

In accordance with this state of mind which almost puts music on the back burner, we've ended up talking more about politics and history than about Invictus, the band's last record closing the "Iconoclast: The Final Resistance" trilogy, a series which also contained a documentary. You may or may not like this trilogy from a musical point of view, but it deserves to be noted for its effort to put in the spotlight historical heroes who are often not mentioned in schoolbooks anymore.

And it is also with a most sincere passion that Maik condemns our consumer society's lack of awareness of the Third World's sufferings.

Exodus From A To B

Thursday, April 29th, 2010 at 4:33pm by Radio Metal Interview
For a lot of people, Exodus remain the epitome of Californian thrash metal. The band’s intensity and aggressiveness barely weakened at all in the past, and Force Of Habit is probably the only area of non-turbulence in their entire discography. In 2007, Exhibit A: The Atrocity Exhibition was a serious blast: modern thrash, full of hatred and progressives songs that echoed Machine Head’s amazing The Blackening. To say the least, the fans were eager to hear the sequel, Exhibit B: The Human Condition, which will be released sometime in May.

We interviewed the man behind the beast: Gary Holt, riff-maker extraordinaire since the beginning of the 80s. We not only talked about this new misdemeanor, but also about the thrash revival we’ve been witnessing in the past few years, the current relationship between Gary and his band’s former frontman, Steve « Zetro » Souza, and the re-recording of the legendary Bonded By Blood (rechristened Let There Be Blood), which sparked off such a debate among the fans.

Note that the band will play nothing else but Bonded By Blood from beginning to end at this year’s Hellfest, and that a commemorative tour is planned next year. That’s the latest craze right now !

Arch(ange) Enemy, The Way Of Angela

Saturday, April 24th, 2010 at 12:10am by Virginie Interview
Arch Enemy revolves around Angela. No one can criticize her, no one can underestimate her, and no one can neglect her. She’s the very heart of the band, and everybody knows it.

This interview with drummer Daniel Erlandsson took place in the cold, outside the venue. Being a victim of self-censorship himself, he was reluctant to provide essential information.

Angela follows a precise ritual. If you want to know what she drinks and what excesses she allows herself – or not – follow the guide.

Behemoth On The Burning Stake Of The Inquisition

Monday, April 19th, 2010 at 4:31pm by Florian Interview
Poland is a beautiful country. Not only is it the birthplace of one of the most talented metal journalists of its generation, it is also the origin for Death metal as destructive as they are great, ranging from Vader to Behemoth and none of them go to waste. In fact, we will be talking about the latter this time.

As many of you know, Behemoth and most prominently Nergal are going through a court case with the current Polish political party in power.

In order to find out more, we met with Krzysztof Kowalik, a Theology Professor called to testify during the trial.

Annihilator, Interview With Jeff Waters

Friday, April 16th, 2010 at 10:45am by Spaceman Interview
Nothing seems to be able to shake Jeff Waters’ passion and faith in his baby, Annihilator. Three record companies in three albums. Indeed, at the time of the excellent Schizo Deluxe, AFM Records never allowed him to promote the album he was so proud of. Which led him to sign with SPV. Unfortunately, shortly after, the label stopped all promotion on all their bands because of serious financial problems. Having taken refuge with Earache Records, Jeff Waters has still got his head firmly screwed on, and continues on his merry way with a smile.

Once again, Annihilator is about to strike hard with a new, self-titled album. Since the bombshell that was All For You, Annihilator never stopped trying to reach perfection, with a series of high quality albums. It’s obvious that Dave Padden, with whom Jeff admits he now forms a real duet, has a lot to do with it. With his youthful looks, Dave is the frontman all bands dream of: charismatic, he turned out to be an excellent guitarist and a vocalist with a powerful voice and a large register – the shadow of Mike Patton is never too far. Add to that Jeff’s qualities as a rhythm guitar player and his incredible sense of melody (which we shouldn’t even have to talk about after a 20-year career), and you get an awesome, unique thrash band.

We took stoke of this whole situation with an extremely agreeable Jeff.

Hellfest And Communication

Friday, April 9th, 2010 at 12:35am by Doc' Interview
Yoann Le Nevé is the co-founder of Furyfest which later became Hellfest in 2006. Yoann accepted to answer to Doc's questions concerning the festival's evolution in terms of communication and promotion in complete honesty. Our interviewee, who is in charge of handling financial partners as well as being head of communications, explains the difficulties that a festival such as Hellfest can encounter with the various important people in the metal scene. Notably, Yoann mentions their recent complicated relationship with the English.

An informative interview on the national and international metal world, mentioning the media, politics and the economy. Jeff Mallet, communication manager, also answered to Radio Metal questions at the end of the article.

Not to be missed.

Shining, The Wolf In The Sheepfold : Has Reached Jazz Integrity

Friday, April 9th, 2010 at 12:23am by Radio Metal Interview
For a good many of us in the Radio Metal staff, Norwegian industrial/jazz/metal band Shining is without a doubt this year’s big discovery. After a quick snack and starters, here comes the plat de résistance: the Radio Metal interview.

We met Jørgen Munkeby (vocals, guitars and saxophone, among others), Tor Egil Kreken (bass) and Torstein Lofthus (drums) on March 16th, just a few hours before the band’s show. It all started in the dressing rooms, where we could get to know one another, and then, what with our growing affinities and a need for privacy, we all five of us moved to Shining’s cramped but highly comfortable tour bus.

The main goal of this interview was to understand what Shining exactly is, and how they could ever release such a crazy and intense industrial metal album as Blakjazz, when the band’s first two albums revolved around acoustic jazz. The other goal was to talk about all the surprising and intriguing things that sprinkle the band’s music, and about various other subjects that really tormented yours truly. Which is why we talked for a solid 45 minutes.

This, dear reader, is a raw transcription of a very stimulating conversation. We will, however, keep the more carnal outcome of this encounter to ourselves.

Rhapsody Of Fire From The Ice Age

Thursday, April 8th, 2010 at 10:56am by Metal'O Phil Interview
They’re probably the only ones who take themselves seriously, and Alex Staropoli laments that fact. However, he does understand that the style and imagery of Rhapsody Of Fire can make people smile.

Reduced to silence for four years because of legal issues with Joe De Maio, Rhapsody Of Fire is back with a new album, The Frozen Tears Of An Angel, that the bands deems «sharper», even «darker». For Rhapsody Of Fire, «darker» manifests itself, in terms of artwork, by a slightly less bright blue than usual. Musically speaking, «darker» is debatable ; it is true, however, that the album goes back to the roots, with more discreet orchestrations and faster tempos.

How did the band take their absence from the media ? How did they go about writing this new chapter ? What’s the future of the band ? Did Luca Turilli finally read The Lord Of The Rings, which he says influences him a lot ? But above all, in retrospect, how do they look at the band's awful first videos ?

many questions that Alex Staropoli answered with the thickest Italian accent on earth.

Samael : The Search Of One's Self

Friday, April 2nd, 2010 at 09:43am by Virginie Interview
Interview with Vorph, leader, singer/guitarist of Samael for their promotional tour of Above. This was also an opportunity to discuss Samael's long career, the way they see the world on a social as well as religious level.

Vorph also mentions their controversial latest album in an intelligently objective and honest way. As well as the fact that the band find it important to takes breaks in their careers in order to find themselves again and enable a better start.

The Best Is Yet To Come

Friday, March 26th, 2010 at 5:29pm by Radio Metal Interview
The day after they recorded Taratata, the Scorpions welcomed to their hotel a horde of journalists from the music world but not exclusively, since our colleagues from Paris Match were there as well.

The scene took place in one of these 600$-a-night hotels where the rooms come with a tray of macaroons and a coffee machine, and where you can order a coffee that will cost you no less that 6,50$. Which yours truly did as a matter of principle. It was also the opportunity to witness the traditional «who’s got the biggest» contest between journalists, who spent hours discussing who was the most old school and who met the more celebrities, and trying to demonstrate that their medium is the most wide-spread in France. To be honest, I probably met a good fifty of those «first metal medium in France» that day.

When you know that this will probably be your last opportunity to ever interview the Scorpions, you try to plan everything and to talk about every possible subject. Matthias Jabs I an accessible and friendly character. After only a few minutes, he makes you feel like you’re an old friend. The man welcomes you in his room with his inevitable cap on his head, offers you coffee and macaroons (which he can't eat anyway because he's allergic) et laughs with you about the weird fountain you can see from the window.

This interview was a good opportunity to dissect in minute details the various references of the new album, Sting In The Tail. More particularly, you will discover an unforgettale anecdote about «Sly» and the baby-boom that «Still Loving You» led to. Matthias will obviously reflect on the band's recent decision to put an end to their career after a last farewell tour. Since they still have over two years of touring ahead of them, and because they’re in the middle of the usual post-album honeymoon, the guitarist doesn't seem to fully understand what's going on.
