NAOS: A BREATH OF FRESH AIR
| Tuesday, July 27th, 2010 at 7:20pm by Doc' | Interview |
Naos proved the good quality of their compositions with their 5 track EP Inoctura. By mixing gothic and symphonic atmospheres, the French band offer a sound that is bound to attract metal fans of female vocalist bands. However, Naos does not only stand out because of Sté’s voice, but also thanks to the interesting progressive touches in the songs. As you know, throughout the summer Radio Metal will be setting the spotlight on unknown artists. This week, we are discovering Naos through our interview with Tom (guitar) and Sté (vocals). X-Calibur : Version X Metal
| Thursday, July 22th, 2010 at 08:20am by Doc' | Interview |
Throughout the summer, Radio Metal will be allowing upcoming bands to take over with interviews, articles and other of our home-made specialities. On the 19th of July this year, the Swiss band X-Calibur granted us a short interview to promote their album Distorsions, released last year. Gary, the trio’s guitarist, talked about his three year old band and the various mixtures of metal they perform. Indeed, X-Calibur are the living proof that a band can have influences such as Def Leppard, Rammstein and Slayer...

New Iron Maiden Album : Track By Track
| Friday, July 16th, 2010 at 01:46am by Metal'O Phil | News From The Front |
Having perversely watched the efforts of an adulterous couple trying to avoid being noticed right after extensively exchanging fluids in the 10 o' clock Lyon – Paris high speed train bathroom, here I am in Paris. Note the hustle and bustle from the cleaning staff 10 minutes later. There's nothing cuter than the flush of shame rising upon a lover's cheek. The Final Frontier listening session, a sneak preview of the new Iron Maiden opus, was set at 1 P.M. in the famous EMI building. Unsurprisingly, the building is classy all around with few decorations referring to artists here and there: The Beatles phone booth, Pink Floyd eyes... There is also a great yard where we can sit on the grass to rest or have a drink whilst bathing in the sun. How do they ever manage to work in such a place?!
The listening session takes place in a large room with a stage commonly used for conferences. The plan was to listen to the album and then eat at the buffet. As a result of my work ethics, I feel compelled to sacrifice myself despite the fact that I feel repulsed by these overrated cocktail parties yet this afternoon I will recount my experience at one of them thoroughly and in the best way possible. Rule number 1: never lock a group of hungry people in a room with a group of lesser hungry people and a buffet. As it is to be expected, it's war: the buffet is devastated before the first verse of the first track.
After a brief speech stating that it is a great album and also revealing that the “El Dorado” music video will be available on the web by mid-July, the session begins...

Coroner : The Existential Matter
| Friday, July 2nd, 2010 at 2:45pm by Spaceman | Interview |
Coroner's fans who were at the Hellfest this year were stunned to discover banners announcing Coroner as part of the 2011 edition of the festival, including the special mention “reunion show”. Stunned, because since they split up in 1995, this mythical progressive thrash metal band has always made it clear that there’s no way they would reunite. To the great displeasure of the fans who resigned, even if they kept on dreaming of seeing what was impossible becoming possible. Therefore, when they stumbled upon this ad they inevitably pinched themselves just to be sure they were not dreaming again. This Swiss band, composed with Ron Broder (aka Ron Royce), Tommy Vetterli (aka Tommy T. Baron), and Marky Edelmann (aka Marquis Marky), has put out some of the greatest and most innovative music the metal world has ever known. In that regard, they became one of the most respected bands from the connoisseurs. Listen to such marvels like Mental Vortex or Grin: these albums are still ahead of our time.
Coroner's presence at the 2011 Hellfest programming leads automatically to thousands of questionings. Therefore, we at Radio Metal tried to get some more information. By chance, at the same festival this year, Tommy Vetterli was here to help 69 Chambers out – the band of his lovely wife-to-be – bringing a little bit of his own magic to the stage. One of our performing monkeys caught Tommy right after the show in order to have a little chat with him. All the answers to the fans' questions are here to be found, even though they are probably not what they expect... The least we can say is that Tommy is both a chilled out and quite frank person. He is not the kind of man who wonders too much, it is at least the way we felt meeting him. But when he has to answer questions he does not beat about the bush! He also made some revelations about Kreator, a band he has joined for two really controversial albums, and especially about its leader, Mille Petrozza, which are… quite a surprise!
Here comes the transcription of our improvised little chat...
Alice Cooper Talks About His Nightmare...
| Thursday, July 1st, 2010 at 10:19am by Spaceman | Press Conference |
A few hours before he put the entire Hellfest at his feet, Alice was kind enough to organize a small press conference. Radio Metal and its armada of snoopers could not possibly miss such a good opportunity to glean a few pieces of information and sent an emissary to join a handful of colleagues. The game, however, was not easily won: as Olivier Garnier, promotion manager, told us, Alice Cooper didn’t want this press conference to take place during the Twisted Sister show. Why, you ask? Because he wanted the journalists to go and see Dee Snider’s gang rock the stage rather than listen to his own ramblings. Alice confesses his great respect and friendship with Twisted Sister, and particularly with their frontman.Read the full article...
Far From A Punishment
| Wednesday, June 30th, 2010 at 1:29pm by Doc' | On Tour With |
Spending the whole day with the members of Punish Yourself is far from a punishment. Furthermore, on this Saturday 5th of May, the weather is pleasant and even quite hot in Lyon today. For those of you who (still) don’t know Punish Yourself; they are the leading “electronic rock ‘n‘ roll” band in France. Their music is very similar to industrial metal even though the band from Toulouse have managed to evolve towards different sounds, such as batcave (Gore Baby Gore) and instrumental (Cult Movie). Moreover, Punish Yourself was headlining the Lyon Metal Fest V of which you will be able to read the live report in the next few days on Radio Metal website.
But before that, enter the Punish Yourself universe for a day...
Those Nymphos From Anthrax
| Thursday, June 17th, 2010 at 11:23am by Metal'O Phil | News From The Front |
One evening, as we were talking about Anthrax, our mythical Fucktoy told me: "this story with Belladonna and Bush, it makes me think of a guy who leaves his wife for another woman, but who then wishes to come back to her while he's sitting on the other one just in case. And when one of the two women dumps him, he tries to come back to the other, in vain!". When it comes to human relationships, Scott Ian and his partners in crime are just like teenagers. If you've followed the metal scene news in the last few months, you've most certainly heard some stories about the relationship between Anthrax and its singers: a real soap opera. The last month's pussyfooting recently led to Joey Belladonna's official return. For once, the use of the adjective "incredible" is not excessive. How many of you have followed this story's developments without thinking "can't be, it's a joke!"?
Even if that first official confirmation seems to have put an end to these incidents in the short term, one can't help questioning the stability of the band in the long term.

Nevermore Sucks
| Monday, June 14th, 2010 at 10:32am by Radio Metal | Interview |
The blog Metal Sucks is a big reference for us. Their liberty of tone knows no bound, their analyses are deep and smart, and their sense of humor is caustic. To be honest, we completely identify ourselves in their alternative approach. Metal Sucks is as disturbing as it is unifying. And to top it all, these guys regularly come up with genius ideas to keep their readers spellbound. One of their last strokes of genius was a contest involving the band Nevermore.A few months ago, the instrumental version of the eponymous song from The Obsidian Conspiracy, Nevermore’s new album, leaked on YouTube. So the Metal Sucks guys thought: “What about a contest ?” They contacted the band with their idea: the readers would be invited to submit their own version of the song, with their own lyrics and vocal lines. The contestants would have to send a video with the instrumental track and their vocal recording. The winner would then be invited to perform their version of the song on stage with the band.
The contest was a success, and the winner was announced on May 7th. His name his Ben Robson, and his incredibly entertaining body language has been acclaimed by the readers. Don’t get deceived by his deliciously redneck looks (the Pittsburgh Penguins sweatshirt is a blast), ‘cause Ben is a master. Not only is his vocal performance impressive, but his vocal lines are also particularly inspired.
Here’s his video:
We wanted to know more about the Ben phenomenon and contacted him for a few questions.
You can read the transcription of our phone interview here.
GIRL POWER IS BACK
| Friday, June 11th, 2010 at 5:12pm by Saff | Interview |
Indica is the new racing horse in the Nuclear Blast stable. After building a strong fanbase in their home country thanks to their “mystic romantic pop-rock”, the five pretty Finns took a plunge in the deep end in 2009 when they played as Nightwish’s supporting act during the European shows. After four albums and a best of in Finnish, Indica are on their way to conquer the old continent with their first English album, A Way Away, produced by Tuomas “Mr. Nightwish” Holopainen.Jonsu, Jenny and Sirkku, three of the band's members, were in Paris at the end of May for a marathon interview day. After being offered several tons of Indica goodies, we were able to ask a few questions to the smiling, over-motivated musicians, proud of their new baby and delighted at the welcome France has given them so far.
This way for the interview!
The Forgotten Singer
| Wednesday, June 9th, 2010 at 12:52am by Margot Lunel | News From The Front |
Does the name My Ruin ring any bells? There is very little media coverage of the band on our side of the world and in fact very little in the States, in their own country. Despite the indifference towards the band shared by three quarters of the metal public, the band are bravely releasing their eighth album, Ghosts And Good Stories, in August this year. What is My Ruin like? Some heavy riffs with a rock n roll and metallic sound at the same time. The band could be placed between the gasoline guzzling southern rock movement and Motörhead. In fact, since we are mentioning the American band, it could be said that Mick Murphy (guitar) shares a slight physical resemblance with Lemmy. Two adjectives to sum up My Ruin’s musical aspect: virility and machismo. That’s when the vocals come up and everyone is left dumbfounded. The music is a “soft” feminine voice of a frail young lady throwing all of her hatred and rage at you. This is where the band’s originality lies: in the contrast of the music “for guys and only guys” and female vocals.

A Luck That Warrel Deign To Talk To Us...
| Friday, June 4th, 2010 at 3:59pm by Spaceman | Interview |
Warrel Dane is an incredible character. First of all, he’s a fantastic singer for Nevermore, clearly one of the most important band in metal nowadays. Humanly, Warrel seems phlegmatic, his personality composed and thoughtful. In the end, the man's niceness puts you at ease very quickly. When we interviewed him, Warrel was obviously knackered, a fact for which he apologized at the end of the conversation. And before I started firing questions, when I asked him if he was OK, he gave me a nervous, hesitating, "I'm OK", before laughing of his tiredness. And yet he managed to answer our questions with a truly infectious good mood.
This interview was a good opportunity to talk about The Obsidian Conspiracy, Nevermore’s first album in five years, but also about various subjects, among which the contest our American friends of Metal Sucks organized and which was won by Ben Robson and his now cult video.

To Arms, Listeners !
| Tuesday, June 1st, 2010 at 1:48pm by Metal'O Phil | Interview |
As a result of the tragic Polish presidential plane crash, the Sabaton Swedes have decided to respect the mourning period by postponing the recording of what they claim to be the grestest Heavy Metal music video of all time. For the release of their new album Coat of Arms, the band decided to call upon their fans to find theme ideas. The band received an unexpected amount of 10 000 suggestions, running from bizarre (Star Wars) to serious and relevant to the band's image, such as the Battle of Warsaw in 1944.
We also took advantage of the interview with bassist Pär Sundström to evoke the subject of Metalizer, the first album which the band released... only three albums later!

Sex, Danko & Rock N'Roll
| Thursday, May 27th, 2010 at 3:30pm by Spaceman | Interview |
Honestly, nowadays, what’s more rock’n’roll than Danko Jones? Airbourne? Nice try, but too close to AC/DC, and therefore too conformist. The henhouse Buckethead demanded be built during the recording sessions for Chinese Democracy, and which was, or so the legend says, brought down by Axl Rose’s wolf? Too weird. French deputy Patrick Roy, who made a habit of speaking of hard rock in front of his peers? Too well-dressed. Giant turtles laying eggs in Guyana? Errrr... No, nothing’s more rock’n’roll than the madman Danko Jones when he treads the boards.Speaking of which, the man releases a his new album this year, Below The Belt. Danko's back in all his glory, after a Never Too Loud that was quite nice but showed far too much restraint for the fans, who wanted only one thing: to hear some rock! And with this new record, it's very likely they found the best recipe: hard heavy music with perfect melodic choruses and vocal lines that have never been so rich before. Below The Belt is a mine for hard rock hits.
We wanted to know more about Danko Jones, the character (you could almost say the comedian), the band, but also about Below The Belt, an album with a nice future. To answer our questions, we interviewed John Calabrese, Danko’s bassist and friend, the man who puts some depth in all this craziness. Or maybe not…
R.I.P. RONNIE JAMES DIO, 1942-2010
| Monday, May 17th, 2010 at 10:10pm by Spaceman | News From The Front |

Wendy Dio's message:
« Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45 a.m. [on Sunday] 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private goodbyes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever.»
Ronnie James Dio lost his battle with stomach cancer and died at the age of 67.
On Saturday 15th, in the evening, Wendy Dio had to refute several rumours announcing the death of the singer. She indeed declared: "he is not doing good, but he is not dead.". It is nonetheless only a few hours later that she posted the message announcing Dio's death.
We can be surprised by such a tragic and sudden end. Dio indeed started his cancer treatment only six months ago, at what was still an early stage of the disease. Dio's statements were positive and implied that he had good chances to get over the illness. He was even determined to take part in the gigs organised by Heaven and Hell for their summer tour – until very recently. These dates finally had to be cancelled. Although these cancellations did not sound particularly alarming, we can now deduce that they were probably the consequence of an aggravation of Dio's health.
The loss is enormous – possibly the most terrible one that the world of Metal ever had to cope with. Ronnie James Dio was the most respected man of all times in the metal/hard rock community. If there is a man who succeeded in federating and being respected by all – thrashers, black metal fans, death metal fans, doomsters, proggers, glamers, heavy metal fans, etc. – it can only be him. Because he played with Black Sabbath, Elf, Rainbow, Dio or Heaven And Hell, his influence is and will always be deep. Incidentally, he's also the man who made the "devil horns" become the symbol of our community – a symbol used by all, in every single metal gig. No doubt: the world of Metal will struggle to recover from such a loss.
Do not hesitate to share your opinion and feelings with us in the comments or on Dio's official facebook page.
In order to pay tribute to the "elf with a golden voice", Radio Metal organises a 48h-long Dio Marathon starting today at 2 pm and ending Wednesday at the same time. During this time, the radio will only broadcast titles from Dio, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, Elf, Rainbow, etc. The marathon will only be interrupted by tonight's Body Electric (8 pm), which should follow its normal course.
Tomorrow's Anarchy X will however be entirely dedicated to the singer. You will then have the possibility to call us to request specific titles, and to share with us your passion for his music, your anecdotes, gigs memories, etc.
Bruce Dickinson : " Planet Earth, Maiden Force 1 Calling "
| Friday, May 14th, 2010 at 3:12pm by Margot Lunel | News From The Front |
Frankly, one wonders if there are really only 24h in Bruce Dickinson's standard days. Aside his role of frontman for Iron Maiden(which will release its 15th album this summer) and his solo career which he leads under his own name , Bruce still finds time to fill his free time with a variety of activities. It has to be said: this great singer is not only successful in the music industry. The Iron Maiden vocalist's hobbies are extremely varied, and in the last few years, he never hesitated to share them with his public. Dickinson has for instance a great interest for literature. He demonstrated his writing talent in a book called Lord Iffy Boatrace, which was successful enough for the publisher to ask for a follow-up. The Television and Cinema worlds are also familiar with the great singer, who wrote the scenario for the fantasy movie Chemical Wedding, and who made several appearances in the BBC TV-series The Paradise Club.

"Religious Enlightenment : I Think It's All Bullshit."
| Friday, May 14th, 2010 at 2:15pm by Metal'O Phil | Interview |
Come on, be honest: who ever really paid attention to Tarot before Marco Hietala and his two-headed beard joined Nightwish? And yet Tarot has been knocking about unpretentiously for over 25 years. Very quickly, the Finns traumatized the Metallica roadies with their inordinately heavy and cumbersome amps. Their new album, "Gravity Of Light", is about religious oppression on non-believers. On the occasion of this imminent release, Metal'O Phil got to talk to Marco. The good little snoopers that were are couldn't help trying to glean a few information on the new Nightwish album, which won't be released before 2011. Speaking of which, we asked Marco about his recruitment in the band – which was not all that easy...

EMI, Clash Of The Titans!
| Friday, May 14th, 2010 at 10:18am by Margot Lunel | News From The Front |
We’ve been telling you about the crisis that has hit the music industry for quite a while now. The proof of the matter lies in the fact that even the greatest of stars are affected now. For now, we will concentrate solely on the British music company which has been heading straight down to Hell. Who would have thought that this famous record company responsible for many prestigious and popular artists could have ended this way? It’s time to evaluate this critical situation from which the company might never recover.

« The Music Is Like A Missile, And The Lyrics Are The Warhead For It »
| Friday, May 7th, 2010 at 6:3pm by Metal'O Phil | Interview |
When you listen to him, Maik, Heaven Shall Burn's guitarist, seems more fascinated by history than by music. Music seems to be a pretext for him to convey a message, and to re-establish historical accuracy, in particular for some specific WWII events: "The music is like a missile, and the lyrics are the warhead for it ".
He admits it with a humility that commands respect: "Without the lyrics, I don't think that our music, or even Heaven Shall Burn would be anything special. We're totally aware that we're not Morbid Angel or Dream Theater, like great musicians who just do Art through the music they play".
In accordance with this state of mind which almost puts music on the back burner, we've ended up talking more about politics and history than about Invictus, the band's last record closing the "Iconoclast: The Final Resistance" trilogy, a series which also contained a documentary. You may or may not like this trilogy from a musical point of view, but it deserves to be noted for its effort to put in the spotlight historical heroes who are often not mentioned in schoolbooks anymore.
And it is also with a most sincere passion that Maik condemns our consumer society's lack of awareness of the Third World's sufferings.
